Soccer, the most loved sport in Haiti, is enjoyed by players and spectators.

Throughout Haiti, young people play in open fields, often barefoot, with makeshift goals. Typically, villages form their own teams and compete with other village teams—especially during summer vacation. Sometimes, woven thatched panels are used to barricade the field and an entrance fee is charged. Our high school has a nice soccer field in the back of the property. The team practices several times each week, and there’s a network of twenty teams that they compete against.

The New Missions soccer team at a competition: Louvenson (center) as goalie and Ose (right of goalie) plays left wing.

Two of the players, Ose and Louvenson, are graduating this year and have not only enjoyed the opportunity to use their soccer talent, but are also grateful to the mission for their education. Ose attends our Neply church, is on the Neply soccer team, and would like to study law upon graduation. As a child,  Louvenson’s aunt enrolled him in our Darbonne Elementary School. Louvenson is so thankful that he’s also been able to attend high school and would love to pursue engineering. He hopes New Missions can continue helping kids get an education.~Rachel DeTellis
