Our Tom Gateau school is in the mountains off of the Leogane Plain—serving 319 students from preschool through 9th grade.

Many children walk a good distance to school on mountainous paths from other small villages or home clusters. In 2011, New Missions adopted the church led by Pastor Vernete Joseph and his wife Gysele Fabrine. A church and classroom building were constructed after the 2010 earthquake, but up until now the school food has been cooked on charcoal under a thatched temporary structure.

Thankfully, a new school kitchen is nearing completion. Charlie and his construction crew are also on location working on a new roof for the building. It has a rear storeroom for the sacks of school food, and a front kitchen with a serving window opening onto a small, covered porch. Large propane burners will be purchased and installed very soon. Cool, rainy days can be common in the mountains, so this kitchen is a blessing not only for the cooks but the entire school. Thank you to the individual donors and Liberty Church in Dublin, Georgia, for funding this project! ~Rachel DeTellis
