Back to School
// Rachel DeTellis
Going back to school is an exciting time for our students in Haiti.
They return to structure and routine as most of them had little to occupy their time over the summer. However, this time can be challenging for parents as they try to provide the necessities for school. We talked with three moms and their children about getting ready for a new school year. These mothers are planners and started saving money in January so they would be prepared to purchase all their children would need.

Some mothers earn income by doing odd jobs such as peoples’ laundry, selling cooked food, etc. However, you can partner with parents to provide a shoebox gift for their student in our schools. These include: school supplies (pens, pencils, notebooks) backpack, shoes, socks, underwear, hair barrettes/ribbons, soccer ball, flashlight and batteries, and a water bottle. “Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and He will repay him for his deed.” (Proverbs 19:17) They are grateful for any of these items to be included in their child’s Christmas shoebox gift as it helps to lighten their load. Thanks to everyone packing a gift this season! ~Rachel DeTellis
